John Doerr: Seeking salvation and profit in greentech

TED Talks distributes some amazing presentations by world experts on various topics. John Doerr is at the forefront of green technology. This is a very compelling talk. He begins by telling a story about sitting around the kitchen table and talking about global warming when his 15-year old daughter confronts him and says, "Dad, your generation caused this problem, and you have got to fix it." This is his response.

This is a great presentation. I was stunned by his example of how Wal Mart plans to go green because of the CEO’s attention and focus on the environment. I thought it was a great idea to make going green their top priority and reduce consumption in 7 years. The attention to the extreme importance of immediacy and idea of having a goal and creating action now sets a great example. Their simple solutions such as using energy efficient heating and cooling systems, cfl lighting, specific refrigeration sections, paint the roofs white, and the of use skylights and natural light is great. I think it is interesting how Wal Mart is so massive that it can take these issues into such a large scale and have a powerful impact on leading the way towards utilizing green practices to their fullest. One of the most intelligent ways to advertise going green is though having large, significant companies draw a high emphasis on it and sell it effectively. Other companies need to follow Wal Marts idea.

I find it really cool that a fifteen year old understands what is going on here. It is great to know that people of all ages are trying to fix what is going on in the world.
if Wal mart can actually go green in just 7 years, that would be absolutely amazing. The fact that this company has such high goals and expectations of themselves, really speaks volumes to who they are. If Wal mart can succeed in doing this, they will open new doors to many major companies who will hopefully follow in their footsteps.
