Utopia in Music Media

I don't know if anyone remembers, but Kandice and I think Bre (how do you spell it?!) and I all listen to the band MGMT and we've spoken about a particular music video that is very "Utopia." I thought you guys might like to see it, it's pretty psychedelic and a little ridiculous at times, but it just goes to show what some people think the perfect society would be like.

The reason Bri and I felt that this video was such a great example of Utopia is because the primal nature of it. I think that technology has become our greatest hinderance in making a more peaceful and perfect society. People are forgetting about making connections with people, with email and cell phones limiting human interaction it is no wonder that leaders are so apathetic about starting wars and harming innocent civilians. I believe that if we strip ourselves of all of the concerns for materials and focused on necessities rather than wants, we could have the more perfect society that so many before us have wanted to obtain. Going back to our natural instincts, working together, becoming a community again, like the "crakers," will save the human race. I also think going back to such a way of thinking we would stop living on the environment and begin to live with the environment. Often times people fail to realize that by damaging the world around us as we have been doing, we are also hurting ourselves and our future generations.

I completely agree with Kandice. When asked what our ideal utopia would be, we both came up with a sort of tribal vision. We felt that a community disconnected from the fast-paced reality of life could instead be connected to the environment surrounding it. Not only would the focus be redirected from money and materialistic expectations, but it would be redirected inward, on an individual level. Peace and understanding cannot begin on a global level. Every act to improve the environment and better our understanding of the people around us starts on a much smaller scale.
As fans of MGMT, we found a common utopia as depicted in the music video. Life isn't about material goods or fame. These are just aspects of our pathetic human desires.
